* The second qualification mission of ARIANE 5 (Flight 502) has been
postponed to September 30 at the earliest due to a component alert on
the VULCAIN main cryogenic engine. ESA and CNES plan to remove the
current engine in Kourou and replace it with the engine initially
prepared for Flight 503.
* ARIANESPACE's board of shareholders has postponed its meeting to
June 30 to give more time to FRANCE's new government to overview the
nomination of the company's new chairman.
* NSAB of Sweden has contracted with HUGHES SPACE & COMMUNICATION for
the procurement of the SIRIUS 3 direct broadcasting satellite, a spin-
stabilized HS-376W spacecraft, due for launch on an Ariane in late 1998.
* Russia's KOMPOMASH consortium is preparing the GOSTELESAT
constellation for mobile communications using 24 satellites in medium
Earth orbit and 91 in low Earth orbit. Launches are planned in 2001 to
2003.
* INTA of Spain has bought two CASTOR 4B solid rocket motors to be used
as first stage for the first two flights of the CAPRICORNIO launch
vehicle in 1999.
* CAL CORPORATION of Canada will provide two CALTRACK star trackers to
AEROSPATIALE of France for the first PROTEUS small satellite, namely the
French/US JASON 1 oceanography satellite to be launched in 1999.
