However, some adaptations are still possible he said before agreeing that the increase of competitivity for French aerospace companies is paramount and that a consolidation is mandatory in Europe. A statement on the government's new aerospace & defense policy is planned for June 21. The previous government had planned to merge AEROSPATIALE and DASSAULT AVIATION before privatizing the resulting group as well as to privatize THOMSON-CSF. * Moreover, the new FRENCH GOVERNMENT, main shareholder of ARIANESPACE through CNES and state-owned AEROSOATIALE and SEP, has agreed on all decisions taken by ARIANESPACE's board on May 23. Mr. Jean-Marie Luton is thus expected to be appointed Arianespace's new chairman & CEO during next shareholders meeting on June 30. * CNES has notified the manufacturing contract of the SPOT 5 remote sensing satellite to an industrial team led by MATRA MARCONI SPACE. Total cost of the program is estimated circa US$400 million. * PANAMSAT CORP., of Greenwich, Connecticut, has signed a new contract with ARIANESPACE, of Evry, France, for the launch of a future large satellite in early 1999. This is currently planned to be the second HS-702-type spacecraft ordered to HUGHES. * ROLLS ROYCE PLC has sold its Canadian subsidiary BRISTOL AEROSPACE LTD, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, to MAGELLAN AEROSPACE CORP., of Toronto, Ontario. BRISTOL is the manufacturer of the BLACK BRANT series of sounding rockets. * The US AIR FORCE has awarded a US$21-million increase to an existing contract with LOCKHEED MARTIN ASTRONAUTICS for the refurbishing and launch of 3 converted MINUTEMAN missiles as part of the MULTI-SERVICE LAUNCH SYSTEM (MSLS) program. * MATRA MARCONI SPACE, of Velizy, France, was awarded a ECU9-million (US$10.5-million) contract from the EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY for the development of pallets which will hold and provide power to experiments to be placed on the SPACE STATION's main truss after 2001.
