=== FROM THE PARIS AIR SHOW ===
* France's new PRIME MINISTER, Mr. Lionel Jospin, has announced that his
government will not favor the privatization of large public companies in
situation of competition. However, some adaptations are still possible
he said before agreeing that the increase of competitivity for French
aerospace companies is paramount and that a consolidation is mandatory
in Europe. A statement on the government's new aerospace & defense
policy is planned for June 21. The previous government had planned to
merge AEROSPATIALE and DASSAULT AVIATION before privatizing the
resulting group as well as to privatize THOMSON-CSF.
* Moreover, the new FRENCH GOVERNMENT, main shareholder of ARIANESPACE
through CNES and state-owned AEROSOATIALE and SEP, has agreed on all
decisions taken by ARIANESPACE's board on May 23. Mr. Jean-Marie Luton
is thus expected to be appointed Arianespace's new chairman & CEO during
next shareholders meeting on June 30.
* CNES has notified the manufacturing contract of the SPOT 5 remote
sensing satellite to an industrial team led by MATRA MARCONI SPACE.
Total cost of the program is estimated circa US$400 million.
* PANAMSAT CORP., of Greenwich, Connecticut, has signed a new contract
with ARIANESPACE, of Evry, France, for the launch of a future large
satellite in early 1999. This is currently planned to be the second
HS-702-type spacecraft ordered to HUGHES.
* ROLLS ROYCE PLC has sold its Canadian subsidiary BRISTOL AEROSPACE
LTD, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, to MAGELLAN AEROSPACE CORP., of Toronto,
Ontario. BRISTOL is the manufacturer of the BLACK BRANT series of
sounding rockets.
* The US AIR FORCE has awarded a US$21-million increase to an existing
contract with LOCKHEED MARTIN ASTRONAUTICS for the refurbishing and
launch of 3 converted MINUTEMAN missiles as part of the MULTI-SERVICE
LAUNCH SYSTEM (MSLS) program.
* MATRA MARCONI SPACE, of Velizy, France, was awarded a ECU9-million
(US$10.5-million) contract from the EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY for the
development of pallets which will hold and provide power to experiments
to be placed on the SPACE STATION's main truss after 2001.
